Workshop of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources will be held in Kiev

From 13 to 16 May, a seminar on the development of scientific potential and deepening of the cooperation of Ukrainian scientists in the scientific directions of this international organization will be held within the framework of the visit to Kyiv of David Agnew, the Executive Secretary of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) and Keith Reid, CCAMLR Secretariat Scientific Manager.

During the workshop, which will be held on the basis of the National Antarctic Scientific Center of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine with the support of the State Agency for Fisheries, scientists will jointly consider the following issues:

  • CCAMLR Objectives and history;
  • Main processes in CCAMLR historical and future perspective;
  • CCAMLR Ecosystem Monitoring Programme;
  • Toothfish exploratory fisheries and research;
  • Scientific observations on board of fishing vessels;
  • C2 and CDS catch reporting reconciliation;
  • Area 48 population hypothesis;
  • Research proposals and analysis of fishery data;
  • Science strategy for Ukrainian CCAMLR engagement.

Recall that CCAMLR was established in 1982 to preserve Antarctic marine organisms and ensure their rational use. The Commission consists of 24 Member Countries and the European Union. The Secretariat (headquarters) of the Commission is located in Hobart, Tasmania (Australia).

Ukraine has joined CCAMLR on February 4, 1994, since the Antarctic seas are of strategic importance for the development of the Ukrainian fishing fleet, in particular, the fishery of valuable marine species — the toothfish and the Antarctic krill. Besides, Ukrainian scientists ensure the implementation of CCAMLR research programs and are actively involved in the international system of scientific observation on Ukrainian ships and the vessels of other Member States.

Recall that in October 2018, the Ukrainian delegation consisting of specialists from the National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Fisheries and Marine Ecology (IREEM) and the representatives of Ukrainian fishing companies took part in the work of CCAMLR meeting. On the results of their work, you can read here.

The seminar will be held in the premises of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine at the address: 16, Shevchenko Blvd, Kyiv, conference hall. The event starts on May 13 at 9.30.
