Ukrainian scientists will be able to conduct polar research not only at the Vernadsky base and the Noosfera ice class research vessel, but also use the infrastructures of other countries in the Antarctic and Arctic.
This opportunity is provided by the POLARIN project in the frame of the EU’s Horizon Europe program, which involves the National Antarctic Scientific Center and 49 other organizations around the world.
The first call for proposals has been announced now within POLARIN.
For Ukraine, it offers 47 polar research infrastructure facilities of the participating countries, in particular, 9 Antarctic and 26 Arctic stations, 1 Arctic observatory, 9 oceanographic research vessels, and 2 repositories.
For its part, Ukraine invites foreign scientists to work at Vernadsky base and the Noosfera ice class research vessel.
Professional researchers of the polar regions from any scientific institutions, higher educational institutions, or other organizations can apply. Groups of applicants with more than four members must involve researchers from at least two different countries.
Proposals must contribute to addressing at least one of the following key research challenges in the polar regions:
- Sea Ice and Polar Oceans in the Climate System
- Polar Ice Sheets, Glaciers and Sea Level
- Terrestrial Carbon Cycle and Permafrost
- Polar Ecosystems and Biodiversity
- Atmosphere dynamics and chemistry
- Paleoclimate Processes and Variability
- Humans, societies and global changes.
The period of availability of each infrastructure within the call is determined by each country separately. This information is present at the POLARIN website. The maximum period of use of the infrastructure should not exceed 3 months.
Applications are accepted through the online system POLARIN Transnational Access Platform (POLARIN TAP). There you can find detailed information on the conditions of the call (Guidelines for Applicants), a complete list of infrastructures, document templates, etc.
The deadline for applications is November 28, 2024 (16:00 CET).
Decisions on the selected proposals will be announced in mid-March 2025 via POLARIN TAP.
