Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings (ATCM)
Every year the 12 countries that have signed the Antarctic Treaty, as well as those countries that are interested in conducting scientific research activities in this region, meet at the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings (ATCM). At such meetings, representatives of the countries exchange information and hold consultations regarding activities on the icy continent. In addition, at the meetings, recommendations are adopted for the governments of the countries, which contribute to the observance of the principles and goals of the Antarctic Treaty.
The entry into force of the Environment Protocol in 1998 saw the establishment of the Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP). The CEP usually meets concurrently with the ATCM to address matters relating to environmental protection and management and provide advice to the ATCM. Besides the regular ATCM and CEP meetings, the Consultative Parties also convene occasional Special Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings and Meetings of Experts to address specific subjects.
