A Photo exhibition was opened in the Verkhovna Rada to celebrate the anniversary of Akademik Vernadsky station

Starting with February 6, 2020, the photo exhibition “Ukraine in Antarctica: the 200th anniversary of the discovery of the continent” will be exhibited in the Verkhovna Rada. It was on February 6, 1996, when the Ukrainian flag was hoisted over the station that Great Britain had transmitted to Ukraine. The exhibition will run until February 28.

The exposition presents photographs of the life and research of Ukrainian scientists in Antarctica, in particular, a historical photo of 1996, when a British icebreaker brought members of the first Ukrainian Antarctic expedition to Galindez Island.

“Great Britain has played an important role in bringing Ukraine back to the group of countries conducting research on this continent. I say “return” because the Ukrainians took part in many expeditions to Antarctica starting from the very first one, “– said Tim Woods, Defence Attaché of the British Embassy in Ukraine, Commodore of the Royal Navy.

This year, the Ministry of Education and Science plans to approve the State Program for Polar Research for 2021-2030. The program will include such important areas as comparative studies of climatic and other processes in Antarctica and the Arctic; restoration of the ocean research fleet.

The photo exhibition, initiated by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the National Antarctic Scientific Center, was first presented on December 19, 2019 at Boryspil International Airport. During 2020, the exhibition will travel to different locations throughout Ukraine.
