The Ukrainian research icebreaker Noosfera reached the Antarctic Akademik Vernadsky station. The vessel anchored near Galindez Island today, January 27, 2023.
“For us, the arrival of Noosfera is a very joyful event, because it is an opportunity to finally see our colleagues and compatriots after 10 months of wintering, and also to receive gifts from home. And this is also the beginning of a very responsible work – a big repair at our beloved station,” said Yurii Otruba, head of the 27th UAE.
Noosphere delivered cargoes and a team of Ukrainian technical specialists to the station.In the next few months, they have to carry out urgent work on the modernization of Vernadsky, which is necessary for the successful wintering of the next, 28th UAE. In particular, it is about replacing the heating system and earthing work of the diesel compartment and main building of the station
It is assumed that after unloading the vessel will go to the Chilean port of Punta Arenas to ensure the upcoming rotation of annual expeditions at Vernadsky.
We remind you that in the second Antarctic season, Noosfera left the port of Cape Town (South Africa) at the end of December 2022. First, the vessel delivered cargo and a team of polar explorers to Arctowski Polish Antarctic station located on King George Island.
