The third Antarctic season of Noosfera continues: the icebreaker is again on its way to Vernadsky

The Ukrainian research vessel Noosfera continues its third Antarctic season. Today, March 15, 2024, the icebreaker departed from the port of Punta Arenas (Chile) to Akademik Vernadsky station.

Our flagship has two important missions:

  • deliver the 29th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition to the station. Its 14 members have to replace colleagues from 28th UAE who have been working in Antarctica for almost a year. Together with the new team, a lot of cargo is going to Vernadsky for its wintering, in particular, food, stuff, fuel, etc. A total of 50 tons of cargo and 140 cubic meters of fuel.
  • ensure seasonal research in the Southern Ocean and at Akademik Vernadsky station, in particular, within the framework of international projects. One of them concerns the study of the possible occurrence of silicones in Antarctica. Scientists will take samples of phytoplankton, krill, and bottom sediments necessary for further research.

The captain of this voyage of the RV Noosfera is Pavlo Panasiuk. It was he who once led the ship in its first Antarctic season.

We remind you that this is the third Antarctic season of the RV Noosfera. It began on November 17, 2023, when the icebreaker left the port of Cape Town for the icy continent.

The ship provided rotation at Atctowski Polish Antarctic station and also delivered to Vernadsky a seasonal expedition to carry out technical and scientific work. Hence, its second voyage to Antarctica Noosfera was waiting in Chile.

We wish our icebreaker a good journey and successful mission accomplishment!
