Maria Pavlovska, Researcher of the National Antarctic Scientific Center, received a SCAR grant for innovative research of the Southern Ocean

The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) has announced a list of grants awarded in 2019 for innovative research in Antarctica (grant amount is up to 15 thousand dollars).

Among the eight winners from five countries (USA, Japan, Australia, Argentina and Ukraine) is Maria Pavlovska, a young Ukrainian researcher from the NASC Department of Biology and Ecology.

Maria Pavlovskaya got the opportunity to continue her research on the biogeochemical interaction of Antarctic bacteria and microalgae of the Southern Ocean, which she has initiated at Akademik Vernadsky station, at the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology (Bremen, Germany). These studies will contribute to a better understanding of the biological mechanisms of carbon dioxide binding and release in the World Ocean as well as climate change processes.

The SCAR grant to Maria Pavlovska is regarded as an international recognition of the high scientific level of the NASC researchers. By the way, representatives of the scientific community of Ukraine got the opportunity to participate in such competitions thanks to the renewal of Ukraine’s status as SCAR full member last year.
