The All-Ukrainian action “Light a Candle” will also be held 15,000 kilometers away from Kyiv at Antarctic Akademik Vernadsky station. On Saturday, November 23, 2019, 12 polar explorers – the team of the 24th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition – will come together and light 12 candles in memory of more than 7 million Ukrainians, who died in 1932-1933 from an artificial famine caused by the communist Stalinist regime.
According to the head of the station Ihor Dykyy, the team of polar explorers decided to hold this mourning action by Kyiv time along with the whole of Ukraine. So, given the time difference, our polar explorers will light candles when it is 11 am in this part of the icy continent.
