The 12th International Antarctic Conference has ended

The 12th International Antarctic Conference (IAC 12_2025) was held online on May 13–14, 2025. Its program was quite eventful: 82 reports and 103 participants from all over the world (Ukraine, France, Great Britain, Mexico, Czech Republic, Indonesia, United Arab Emirates, Sweden).

What did the scientists discuss?

Earth’s Sciences section

The topics and methods of research have expanded significantly:

  • geology – intensification of offshore operations to collect bottom sediments;
  • geophysics – magnetic prospecting, electrical prospecting, seismoacoustic methods and georadar scanning, as well as analysis of satellite images.

Physical Sciences section

An increase in the quality and quantity of experimental and theoretical scientific research in international cooperation has been noted.

Life Sciences section

The following priority research areas have been identified:

  • evolution of marine and terrestrial Antarctic ecosystems and their adaptation to the impact of extreme environmental factors;
  • biological prospecting — the study of living organisms in Antarctica in terms of their commercial value as a source of genetic and biochemical resources;
  • Integrated planning of environmental protection activities in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, creation of protected areas and introduction of environmental restrictions to preserve typical Antarctic biotopes and rare species, ensuring sustainable (non-exhaustive) development of human activity in the region.

As a result of the discussions of presentations, new contacts were established and new collaborations were initiated with international partners. A Book of abstracts will also be published.

Also, the conference will host a Meteorological School (15–16 May).

The organizers of the IAC express their gratitude to all participants, wishing them success, new achievements, and new Antarctic routes. Special thanks to all the defenders of Ukraine, who make hosting such events possible.
