For the first time the Ukrainian research vessel Noosfera is conducting research in the Southern Ocean time under the contract with the US National Science Foundation.
For several days now, our icebreaker has been working in the waters around the American Palmer station, Antarctica. Researchers from the United States are carrying out their marine research program from the vessel.
In honor of such cooperation, the flags of both countries were raised on both the ship and the station.
It is worth noting that this is the first such mission not only for Noosfera, but also for the Ukrainian fleet as a whole.
“During Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, cooperation with other states in Antarctica is becoming increasingly important for us. This is not only our contribution to the development of world science and the attraction of additional funds from foreign partners, but also “Antarctic diplomacy”, since the icy continent is an important arena of world geopolitics,” noted Evgen Dyky, director of the National Antarctic Scientific Center.
At the end of this week, Noosfera is scheduled to complete its mission on Palmer and, with American colleagues on board, head to the Ukrainian Antarctic Akademik Vernadsky station. Negotiations on expanding cooperation are planned there.
We remind you that the fourth and the most international Antarctic season of Noosfera is currently underway. Earlier, the Ukrainian vessel delivered expeditions to the Arctowski Polish Antarctic station and Vernadsky station. Ahead is cooperation with Spain, the Czech Republic and the implementation of two EU Horizon Europe projects.
