Exhibition on the British past and Ukrainian present of Akademik Vernadsky station

On March 20, 2025, an exclusive photo exhibition “Joint British-Ukrainian Antarctic history: a scientific station, an icebreaker and… an ancient library” will open in Kyiv and simultaneously in London.

The exhibition is dedicated to the cooperation between Ukraine and Great Britain in Antarctica, which has been going on for several decades:

  • In 1996, it was the British who transferred to Ukraine their Faraday station (now Akademik Vernadsky) at no cost.
  • In 2021, the royal ice-class vessel James Clark Ross became the Ukrainian RV Noosfera
  • For almost 30 years, British Antarctic Survey and National Antarctic Scientific Centre have been conducting joint research in different areas: from ozone measurements and monitoring penguin populations to launching oceanographic buoys.

Thus, the story of this collaboration became the topic of a joint photo exhibition.

Sled dogs, mail delivery by plane — such rare photos from British Faraday Station can be looked at for the first time in Ukraine. And the United Kingdom will learn more about Ukraine’s latest research at the same station, as well as about the ” fighting penguins” – our polar explorers who joined the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

A total of 26 photographs will be presented simultaneously in sister libraries: Taras Shevchenko Central Children’s Library in Kyiv and Eltham Library in London.

Official opening: March 20 at 1:00 p.m (UTC+00).

Address in Ukraine: Kyiv, Beresteiskyi Avenue, 25A.

Address in the United Kingdom: Archery Rd,London SE9 1HA.
