Mykola Leonov

Mykola Leonov, Senior Researcher of the Department of Atmosphere Physics

Was born on July 19, 1946, in the village of Petrivske of Krasnoarmeysk (now Pokrovsk) district of the Donetsk region. Graduated from the Physics Faculty of Kyiv Taras Shevchenko University.

Participated in many rocket geophysical ionospheric experiments with the injection of energetic electrons and lithium plasma, which were conducted by the Institute of Space Research of the USSR Academy of Sciences (namely, in the preparation of rocket science on-board equipment, as well as in optical observations from the Yak-40 aircraft). For the high-altitude geophysical experiment (“G60S”) prepared the set of on-board scientific equipment for studying plasma processes during the electron beam injections in ionosphere and magnetosphere of Earth. This experiment, conducted on September 18, 1981 from the board of the “Vertical” rocket at altitudes of up to 1513 km, until now remains unsurpassed by many characteristics. He developed the new type of small-scale onboard electron accelerator on capacitor-storage, and some on-board plasma diagnostic devices for rocket experiments. He developed application software packages for processing telemetry data received, and also processed the data of the experiment.

Participant in the 3rd Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition (1998-1999). During the expedition he observed the ozone amount in the atmosphere, and performed radiosounding of the ionosphere at the Akademik Vernadsky station. Since 1999 has been working at the National Antarctic Scientific Center of Ukraine, performing the control and processing of scientific Antarctic data.
