Polar Regions in the Earth System (PolarRES)

Project goal: obtaining new information about the physical and chemical processes associated with climate changes in Antarctica and the Arctic.

Representatives of 16 scientific organizations from different countries of the world work in the research consortium, such as the USA, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Finland, Norway, Germany, China and other countries.

Researchers are studying how the dynamics of atmospheric processes, melting glaciers, rising sea levels and ocean acidification affect the formation of the regional polar climate. In particular, models are being applied and refined, which will allow forecasting different scenarios of polar climate changes depending on a number of factors, primarily human activity.

Research is being conducted simultaneously in both polar regions of the planet – the Arctic and the Antarctic.

The task of the National Antarctic Scientific Center (NASC) within the scope of the project is to provide climate data from the Ukrainian Antarctic station “Akademik Vernadsky”, to participate in the verification of relevant models, as well as to carry out an analysis of atmospheric processes.
